At MM Personal Styling, we believe in celebrating the everyday woman, and today, we're focusing on new mums. Our Hourglass Balancing Method® is designed to help you balance your proportions and feel fabulous, no matter your shape or size. Here are some tips to help you dress confidently during this special time, featuring our wonderful client and model, Naomi, who came into the studio with her beautiful 3-month-old daughter Maeve. She's a UK size 16 and 5ft 1.

EMBRACE THE CHANGES

First and foremost, your body has done something incredible. It's normal for your shape to change, and it will take time for things to settle down. "Snapping back into shape" is not something we advocate here. Yes, these changes can be challenging, especially when you are processing so many emotions and learning to care for a new baby, but it's a beautiful time, so be kind to yourself and give your body the love it deserves. Melissa is adamant that "buying expensive post-partum specific clothes is not necessary as they're expensive and you won't wear them for long. Instead save your money and shop smart"

THE POWER OF THE CAPSULE WARDROBE

You've heard us say it a million times before: investing in a mix-and-match capsule wardrobe is a game-changer. This rule applies to new mums as too! Focus on versatile pieces that can be dressed up or down according to your lifestyle needs, making getting dressed easier and more enjoyable. Think hard-working separates and one piece items like jumpsuits and dresses that do all the work for you, and a few classic shoes and accessories to finish off your outfit. Naomi loves her collection of versatile pieces that seamlessly fit into her busy life as a new mum and make her feel good because they allow her to reconnect with herself.

IT'S ALL ABOUT BALANCE

Use the Hourglass Balancing Method® to balance your shape. The same rules apply to your postpartum body as they did before. Find your widest point and recreate the hourglass shape with your clothes and some clever styling tricks. For new mums this is likely to be your tummy or your bust, make sure that you look for clothes with structure especially in the shoulders as they'll help to balance your figure.

COFORT AND PRACTICALITY

As a new mum, comfort is crucial. Choose fabrics that are soft, breathable, and easy to care for—this is not a time for hand-wash or dry-clean-only items! Look for pieces that allow you to move freely and keep up with your little one, plus stretchy fabrics, details like zips and button-down styles for those of you who might be breastfeeding will be helpful to you. Leggings and t-shirts are great but they don't always make you feel good but if you love to wear them, invest and elevate them so you can wear it from baby groups, to the supermarket and on to the gym.

LAYER UP

Layering is a fantastic way to add dimension to your outfits. Cardigans, blazers, and lightweight jackets can elevate a simple look and provide extra coverage if you need it. Remember we are always styling a complete outfit! Plus, layers are practical for the unpredictable weather in the UK. Naomi loves the lightweight khaki bomber jacket from River Island.

ACCESSORISE WITH CONFIDENCE

Accessories can transform an outfit and shouldn't be an afterthought A necklace, a chic handbag or a scarf (which can have a million uses when you have a small baby!) will elevate the most casual of outfits and will make you look put-together even if your clothes are quite basic.

FOOTWEAR FIT FOR YOUR LIFESTYLE

Choose footwear that suits your lifestyle. Chances are, you won't be wearing heels or formal shoes much during this period. Invest in comfortable flats, trainers, and low heels or platform shoes that will keep you looking fresh and up-to-date but won't slow you down while you chase after your little one.

BE PATIENT WITH YOURSELF

Finally, remember that it's okay to take time to adjust. Your body has gone through big changes, and it will continue to change and evolve. Be patient and allow yourself to rediscover your style at your own pace. Dressing your postpartum body is all about finding what makes you feel confident and comfortable. With the right pieces, you can look and feel fantastic during this special time.
